How a cyber event impacted medical claims processing for a third of the US

Presented by the Technology Alliance Group NW

This year, a cyber event of enormous magnitude caused U.S. health claims processing to grind to a hault. What happened and how can this be prevented in the future? Join TAG NW on Nov 1 to find out. In this cybersecurity discussion, technology professionals and medical personnel effected by the event will discuss the root cause, the impacts, and the recovery process.

In February 2024, healthcare in the United States almost ground to a halt. A cyber event impacted Change Health, a subsidiary of UHC that processes as much as 1/3 of all US health claims transactions (>$1 Trillion/year). Desperate patients around the country were forced to choose between paying out of pocket for essential medications or forgoing them entirely. Clinics and physicians had to choose between paying their staff and their bills, resulting in UHG paying out billions in interest-free loans to keep these offices afloat.

Also impacted were hundreds of thousands of health providers who could not collect a large percentage of their insurance reimbursements or make claims using the Change Healthcare claims exchange. Many struggled to meet their financial obligations while their revenue stream was impaired. The cyber breach may have compromised personal and medical data of half of all U.S. residents. The Change Healthcare response included identifying the source of the attack, responding to a ransomware request, expediting a massive technology recovery, and responding to providers, patients, and governments.
