Spotlight on North Seattle College: A Fast-Track to Cybersecurity Careers 

If you're looking to fast-track into a cybersecurity career, North Seattle College (NSC) offers both certificate and associate degree programs that prepare students for job-ready roles in information technology. 

The Linux Network and Security Certificate is one of the quickest ways to build essential IT skills. After earning this certificate, students are equipped to pursue entry-level IT jobs while continuing their education in cybersecurity.

These certifications are widely recognized by employers in the Pacific Northwest, and the credits earned are highly transferable to other institutions.

Instructor Poul Nichols highlights the cultural and ethnic diversity of NSC’s student body, many of whom are new to the United States and eager to find meaningful employment. With family and caregiving responsibilities, many students need flexible study schedules, and NSC’s hybrid and remote class options are an ideal fit. For on-campus needs, Seattle’s light rail system makes commuting convenient, even from distant locations. 

According to Robert Bunge, instructor and faculty coordinator, NSC mirrors Seattle’s global diversity, offering extensive support to its varied student population. He encourages students to seek IT jobs early, using their certificate as a steppingstone to gain on-the-job experience while continuing their education. This approach not only builds a portfolio but sets them up for long-term career growth.

Mr. Bunge stresses that cloud computing and cybersecurity skills are in constant demand. "In today’s world, it’s nearly impossible to keep a business running without cloud services and robust cybersecurity controls," he explains. He advises students to specialize in cybersecurity for specific industries like healthcare, aerospace manufacturing, or agriculture. Focus on the industries that are most prolific in your area and learn the cybersecurity skills needed in those fields. 

Many students initially aim for short-term certificates but often find themselves drawn deeper into the cybersecurity field, leading them to pursue advanced courses. NSC partners with institutions like Western and Central Washington University, as well as Edmonds Community College, to facilitate smooth transitions for students advancing toward bachelor’s degrees.
