The Washington Science Olympiad

The Washington Science Olympiad (WSO) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing science education and inspiring students across the state. Through hands-on competitions that resemble academic track meets, WSO fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and teamwork among young learners.

WSO competitions feature 23 team events in each division, inviting middle and high school students from across Washington to participate. This year cybersecurity is being introduced as a new category for high school competitors. Middle school students will have a new category of machine learning through Game Design with AI.

More details on these NEW categories are still being finalized, but students, educators, and volunteers can get involved now.

How to Participate

To join, science teachers from middle or high schools must register their classes at scilympiad.com/wa. Each school can bring a team of up to 15 students. Before the competition, students prepare by cross-training in various science categories that match their skill levels.

On event day, teams travel to a regional location to participate in challenges across 23 scientific categories, typically held in March. Each category involves 2-3 students working together, testing their knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Teams are judged and ranked based on their performance, with top performers moving on to the state tournament at Central Washington University. State champions from both middle and high school divisions become eligible to compete at the national level.

Why Students Should Get Involved

For students, the Washington Science Olympiad offers much more than just a competition. It’s an opportunity to explore potential STEM careers in a fun and dynamic environment, interact with industry professionals, and apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. These experiences help solidify learning and provide valuable achievements for students to add to their portfolios, which can stand out to future employers or colleges.

Moreover, the excitement of competing, celebrating success with family, teachers, and peers, and even advancing to state and national levels often ignites a lifelong passion for science and technology.

How Educators Can Get Involved

Science teachers can play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of innovators. By registering with WSO and leading a team, educators gain access to competition rules and challenges that align with both Washington State Learning Standards and the National Science Education Standards. Whether or not a team competes, teachers can use the rules manual to enrich their science curriculum and inspire students to explore the wonders of STEM.

Additionally, educators who mentor high-achieving students have the potential to earn national recognition for their school’s academic excellence.

Volunteer and Make a Difference

WSO relies on a network of dedicated volunteers—both teachers and non-teachers—who mentor students and assist in running competitions. Volunteers can help students develop technical and teamwork skills, supervise events, proctor exams, or even serve as judges. Those unable to travel to tournaments may contribute as subject matter experts in developing challenges and exams.

Many volunteers are alumni, giving back to an organization that inspired them. Whether you’re a STEM professional or simply passionate about science education, your contribution can have a lasting impact.

Email the director to ask how you can assist.

Sponsor the Future of STEM

Businesses and organizations looking to make a difference can support WSO through sponsorship. Sponsoring these events not only supports STEM education but also provides an opportunity for companies to promote their brands to thousands of students, parents, and educators. Sponsorships can include funding for a specific school, advertising on event materials, or helping cover costs for students to attend competitions.

Your contribution will directly impact the future of STEM by enabling young scientists to thrive. These students may go on to develop groundbreaking technologies and solutions for a better, safer world.

Conclusion

The Washington Science Olympiad is more than just a competition—it’s a platform where young minds can dream big, innovate, and build the foundation for a future in science, technology, engineering, and math. By bringing together students, educators, volunteers, and businesses, WSO creates a vibrant community dedicated to advancing STEM education. Whether you’re a student eager to explore new fields, a teacher inspiring the next generation, or a volunteer committed to making a difference, your involvement in WSO can spark curiosity, foster growth, and open doors to limitless opportunities.
